Help ! - me improve seqtools...

As the author of seqtools I often speculate how users receive and use the program. I have invested a long time writing and supporting the program constantly trying to make the program as user friendly as possible.

The problem here is that in most cases I only receive user reactions when something goes wrong - which unfortunately happens quite often.

In attempt to get an impression of how seqtools works in the hands of its users in their daily work with protein and nucleotide sequences, I have constructed this page which allows you to express your opinion of seqtools.

I hope you will take the time to write your personal mini-review of seqtools. Positive and critical comments are most welcome and will be carefully considered and used to improve the program.

 1.  GENERAL

 1.1   I use Seqtools...

nearly every day
a few times a week
a few times a month
rarely, use other programs most of the time

1.2   I use Seqtools for sequence analysis...

because it covers most of my requirements for sequence analysis
because it works better than other programs I have tried
because the user support is fairly good
because I am used to the program and don't have the energy to find a replacement
because it is free of charge

 1.3   Seqtools is...

fairly easy to use
acceptable - after I got acquainted with the program
difficult to use with a steep and long learning curve
extremely complicated to use, even after extended experimentation
almost impossible to use, far too complicated and user unfriendly

 1.4   Seqtools user support is...

excellent, my questions are answered promptly
adequate
fair
insufficient
hopeless

 2.  THE WEB MANUAL

 2.1   I use the Seqtools web-manual...

almost every day
a few times a week
a few times a month
rarely
never look in the web manual

2.2   I find the web manual...

excellent
quite good
fair
hopeless
never use it

 3.  SEQTOOLS FUNCTIONS

3.1   I frequently use or more more of these functions...

Blast search at NCBI
Local blast search, single database
Local blast search, multiple databases
Create and use local databases
Sequence clustering and merging
Alignment, Clustal
Alignment, Muscle
Alignment, T-Coffee
Tools, EST submission
Tools, multi-sequence functions
Tools, other functions
Special tools, SAGE functions
Special tools, Microarray

3.2   Data storage and handling in sequence headers...

The sequence header is logical and easy to understand
It is difficult to retrieve information stored in sequence headers
I miss options for display of sequence information
I find the options to access Genbank for additional information convenient
I often enter user comments to sequence annotation
I like the design and function of the sequence header options
The Header Compose form is too complicated and is difficult to use
The Header Compose form makes it easy to select which information to display in headers
The various options in the header form are very useful
The header search function works well
It is easy to extract sequences for a new seqtools project from headers of the current project
I often retrieve matching sequences from a local blast search

 3.3   Listing of project sequences...

The listing of project sequences works very well
The options for filtering and editing the listed sequences are good
The list function makes it easy to get an overview of the sequences contained in the project
Searching the project sequence list is easy
The options for formatting sequence annotation improve the project sequence list
I often enter user comments to sequence annotation
I like the design and function of the sequence list form
I think the sequence listing function is difficult to use
I frequently isolate subgroups of sequences from the project sequence list
The various options in the project sequence list form are very useful
I never use the project list facility

 4.  LICENSE and REGISTRATION

 4.1   Registration and licenses...

I have a purchased a full license
I have not purchased a full license because seqtools is not worth the cost
I use a student license because a full license is too expensive
I use a students license - even though I am not a student
I find the repeated registration required for student licenses a nuisance
I find the repeated registration required for student licenses fair

 5.  SUPPORT and FEEDBACK

 5.1   News letters...

I appreciate receiving the news letters
I find the news letters a useful method of communication
I prefer not to receive news letters
I delete Seqtools news letters without reading them

 5.2   User feedback...

Providing feedback is important in order to make the author aware of bugs and problems
It is too much trouble to send feedback when the program behaves strangely
Feedback is important as other users of seqtools may benefit from my feedback
Sending feedback is usually waste of time
I have previously contacted the author of seqtools about problems and bugs
I am satisfied with the actions taken by the author of seqtools when I report a bug
I have reported a serious bug, but nothing happened
If I encounter a bug or a problem in seqtools I start looking for an alternative application
I realise that user feedback is crucial for proper maintanance of seqtools
I know that the author usually donates a full license to users who provide assistance in bug fixing
